Here are the best matchups in each of the smaller-school classifications this weekend. All games at 7:30 Friday:
CLASS 3A
South Fort Myers (9-1) at Naples Barron Collier (9-1): These two met in a preseason game, with Barron Collier winning 45-40 on Aug. 28. Collier’s lone loss is to rival Naples, but they responded with a big win over Lely, keeping the Trojans out of the playoffs. South Fort Myers had its best regular season ever with that lone loss — 27-24 to Riverdale three weeks ago — ending an 11-game winning streak and costing the Wolfpack a district title. SFM is led by QB Dallas Crawford, who in three seasons as the starter has passed for more than 5,000 yards with 52 TDs and is a very good defensive back as well; the team is 25-5 in the regular season with Crawford in the lineup during that three-year stretch. Barron Collier will split most of the work between RBs Torrey Campbell and Travis Weber. The winner will face either Lehigh or Riverdale next week.

CLASS 2A
Jesuit (9-1) at Wauchula Hardee County (8-1): Jesuit enters off an impressive win over Tampa Catholic and is in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Running back Robby Garcia is the star of the Tiger offense with 186 carries for 929 yards and 15 touchdowns. QB Bobby Eveld was Hillsborough County's fifth leading passer. Jesuit seems to have become a different team since a 50-10 loss to Tampa Robinson – the Tigers have outscored the opposition 211-38 since then. Hardee has three players with more than 700 yards rushing, led by junior RB Jarrius Lindsey (950 yards, 15 TDs), so it spreads the wealth. Hardee’s defense limits opponents to just nine points a game. These two met in the 2006 playoffs, with the Tigers winning 28-11. The winner plays the winner of DeSoto County-Robinson.

CLASS 2B
West Nassau (8-2) at Ocala Trinity Catholic (8-2): West Nassau doesn’t mess around – the Warriors run right at you, having rushed for 3,943 yards this season, led by Garrett Hammett’s 1,925 yards and 25 TDs, behind a huge offensive line. Quarterback Deonte Simmons has only thrown the ball 33 times. It’s West Nassau’s first playoff appearance since 2003. The Celtics, meanwhile, are the last team to beat Pahokee in the playoffs (2005) and reached Orlando last year. Trinity Catholic’s two losses came early in the year – it has won seven in a row – and to powers Bolles and Trinity Christian. The Celtics’ offense put up the fourth-most points ever in a regular season the greater Gainesville area’s history. A win by Trinity Catholic and it advances to the regional finals for the fifth consecutive season. Overall, the Celtics have won five straight playoff openers and haven’t lost a home playoff game since 2004. The winner here most likely gets Bolles again.

CLASS 1A
North Florida Christian (7-1) at Melbourne Central Catholic (10-0): MCC led the state in scoring this season, averaging 49 points per game, while NFC is the defending 1A state champion – this may be the best first-round matchup in any class. MCC previously went unbeaten in 1976 (10-0) and 1999 (9-0), but no Hustlers team has won a playoff game in seven appearances. NFC hasn’t lost a first-round game since 1994. The Eagles lost only to Trinity Christian this season. Friday’s winner plays the Crescent City-Trinity Christian winner.

CLASS 1B
Florida Air Academy (8-2) at Pine Castle Christian (9-1): Florida Air tends to go as star running back J.J. Keels goes – he failed to reach the end zone in both FAA losses. It’s just the second playoff appearance all-time for the Falcons and they look for their first win. Pine Castle is in the playoffs for the fourth straight year. The Eagles have won eight straight since an opening-game loss to Lake Highland Prep. Pine Castle Christian senior quarterback Michael Slack has set a school single-season passing yardage record with 951 yards (with 12 TDs) going into the playoffs.
