Kentucky athletes sign with colleges

Many of the state’s finest athletes signed with their college of choice last week.

BASKETBALL

Washington signs with USC

Elizabethtown senior Curtis Washington signed with the University of Southern California. The 6-foot-9 senior didn’t have a single offer until this summer when he impressed a number of scouts in the AAU circuit. Washington led Elizabethtown in scoring last season.

Johnson signs with OU

Trinity senior guard Josh Sewell

Holmes senior Ricardo Johnson signed with Ohio University. The 6-foot-4 guard was the named the Most Valuable Player during last year’s Sweet Sixteen State tournament. Johnson averaged 11 points and five rebounds per game during Holmes’ 2008-2009 state championship season. Johnson had offers from Bradley, Central Michigan, Drake, Duquesne, Marshall and Western Kentucky.

Sewell signs with Miami (Ohio)

Trinity senior Josh Sewell signed with Miami (Ohio) University. The 6-foot-5 senior averaged 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds last season. Sewell had offers from Akron, Western Kentucky, Bradley, Ohio, Virginia Commonwealth, Wright State, Marshall and Middle Tennessee State.

Slaughter signs with Louisville

Christian Academy senior Antonita Slaughter signed with the University of Louisville. Slaughter averaged 14.3 points a game and shot 64.1 percent from the floor last season. Slaughter was ranked as high as No. 37 by some publications and as the 15th best shooting guard.

Barnette signs with Kentucky

Lexington Christian senior Sarah Beth Barnette signed with the University of Kentucky. A life-long fan of the Wildcats, Barnette committed to the school during her sophomore season. Barnette averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game last season.

Samsel signs with Findlay

DuPont Manual senior guard Sean Samsel signed with the University of Findlay. Samel is regarded as one of the state’s best shooters.

O’Conner signs with Tusculum

Scott senior Daniel O’Conner signed with Tusculum College. The 6-foot-8 forward choose Tusculum, which is one of Division II top programs.

Jones signs with Bellarmine

Ballard senior Keisten Jones signed with Bellarmine University. The 6-foot-3 Jones averaged 15 points and eight rebounds per game last season.

Alexander signs with West Point

Rockcastle County senior Jackie Alexander signed with West Point Military Academy.


BASEBALL

Witt, Gott, Riddle and Littrell sign with UK

The University of Kentucky signed four Kentucky high school baseball players last week: Lexington Christian outfielder Lucas Witt, Tates Creek pitcher/infielder Trevor Gott, Western Hills pitcher/shortstop J.T. Riddle and Trinity pitcher Corey Littrell.

Cornett signs with Murray State

Eastern senior Kyle Cornett signed with Murray State University. Cornett excelled on the pitching mound and at the plate last season.

Cosby, Donovan and Asay sign with Northwestern Ohio

Northwestern Ohio signed three local players this week: Tates Creek infielder Zyler Cosby and outfielder/pitcher Phillip Donovan; and Lafayette pitcher Conner Asay. Northwestern Ohio will be starting its baseball program next year.


TENNIS

Roberts signs with UK

Tates Creek senior Grant Roberts signed with the University of Kentucky. The lefthander was the state runner-up last year.

Roebker and Westling sign with XU

Covington Catholic senior Jimmy Roebker and Notre Dame senior Ally Westling signed with Xavier University. Roebker won the state championship last season.


GOLF

Wilshire signs with Central Florida

Scott County senior Kyle Wilshire signed with the University of Central Florida. Wilshire finished in the top 10 in the state tournament this past October. He is the first Scott County golfer to sign with a Division I school.


SWIMMING

Brandenburg and Coltharp sign

A pair of Beechwood swimmers signed with schools last week. Krissie Brandenburg signed with the University of Louisville. Shane Coltharp signed with Louisiana State University.

Wilson signs with UK

Paul Laurence Dunbar senior Kristen Wilson signed with the University of Kentucky.
