Two of the top teams in the state stayed unbeaten with big wins Saturday in Week 7 of the Illinois high school football season.
Matt Perez scored four times and rushed for 222 yards while quarterback Tyler Benz completed 18 of 21 passes as No. 1 Maine South clobbered Waukegan 45-0 Saturday afternoon.
Glenbard West, ranked No. 2 in Class 7A, downed York 42-7, and as a result, are likely to move into the No. 1 spot after St. Rita fell to Providence Catholic on Friday.
While Providence took over the lead in the Chicago Catholic Blue division, the East Suburban Catholic Conference got its own surprise when St. Patrick, 1-3 in the conference going in, surprised 3-1 Marist 25-20 Saturday afternoon.
In Chicago city play, Chicago Bogan raised its record to 7-0 with a 32-6 win over Chicago Kelly.
The Western Sun Conference suffered a surprise Friday when Rochelle upset Geneva, and Saturday’s 35-6 win for Kaneland over DeKalb set up a three-way tie between Geneva, Kaneland and Glenbard South.
On Friday, the Geneva Vikings lost a regular season game for the first time since Oct. 20, 2006. Rochelle, which entered the game with a 4-2 record, beat Geneva 21-14.
In the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference, Bolingbrook knocked off previously unbeaten Lincoln-Way East, nearly doubling them up in a 46-24 win at Bolingbrook.
In the best big school game of the week, Providence Catholic shut out No. 1 and unbeaten St. Rita 10-0 in an amazing display of defensive football. St. Rita had been averaging almost 40 points a game leading up to the Friday night contest.
The game’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Tim Hanrahan after St. Rita gave Providence the ball on the St. Rita 26-yard line on a bad punt.
There were plenty of perfect records preserved, however, on Friday night. Casey-Westfield, the No. 1 team in Class 2A, crushed winless Oblong 61-0, while Brown County, the No. 1 team in Class 1A, edged No. 3 Triopia 10-3 in a battle of unbeatens in the Western Illinois Valley North division.
In a cross-division game in the West Prairie Trail Conference, Princeville (6-1) defeated Stark County (5-2). In another upset, Tuscola (4-3) blanked Maroa-Forsyth (5-2) in Okaw Valley Blue division competition.
Lexington remained unbeaten with a 28-10 win over Flanagan-Cornell in the Heart of Illinois Conference. In Southwest Prairie action, Oswego (6-1) needed two overtimes to defeated Plainfield Central (3-4) to remain atop the standings.
Mundelein Stevenson remained unbeaten with a 36-22 win over Libertyville in the North Suburban Lake Conference.
Wilmington, No. 1 in Class 3A, clobbered Lisle 55-7.
