FOOTBALL
CLASS AA
#1 Capital Bruins (6-0) at #8 Billings West Broncs (4-2)Friday, October 9 - 7:30 PMCapital won both games between these two teams last season. The first was a 22-21 thriller in the regular season, while the second was a 35-14 victory in the state championship game. Capital is coming off back-to-back emotional wins against C.M. Russell and cross-town rival Helena, so it will be interesting to see if the Bruins suffer any sort of letdown. On the other hand, when you've won a Class AA record 27 straight games, the letdowns are few and far between. West barely snuck by winless Butte last week, possibly because they were looking ahead to this game and also because they were without starting quarterback Derek Dennehy. The junior will be a gametime decision with an ankle injury. West is the last team to have beaten Capital, doing it back in 2007.
#7 Billings Skyview Falcons (4-2) at #2 C.M. Russell Rustlers (5-1)Friday, October 9 - 7:30 PM
Skyview's defense will be looking to shut down CMR's explosive offense
The Rustlers could suffer from a hangover after falling just short in last week's big showdown against Capital, but their talented offense should prevent that from happening. Running back Gavin Hagfors has been a great compliment to quarterback Jake Bleskin and the passing game in recent weeks, giving the Rustlers a balanced attack. They are averaging over 400 yards a game on offense. Skyview's offense is built around the running game, and they get production in that area from both running back Carson Hilliard and quarterback Connor Lebsock. If the Falcons can control the clock and keep the Rustler's offense off the field, they have a chance to pull the upset.
#9 Bozeman Hawks (4-2) at #3 Helena Bengals (4-2)Friday, October 9 - 7 PMThese are two of the seven teams in Class AA who are part of the logjam at 4-2. Bozeman has the top scoring offense in the league, averaging 39 points per game. Junior quarterback Tanner Roderick is the catalyst with both his arm and his legs, averaging over 300 yards of total offense per game by himself. Helena has tremendous speed on defense and is allowing just 17 points per game. They've already held Capital and CMR, the second and third highest scoring offenses in the league, in check so they could be up to the challenge of grounding the Hawks.
CLASS A
#3 Frenchtown Broncs (5-1) at #5 Beaverhead County (Dillon) Beavers (4-1)Friday, October 9 - 7 PMBoth these teams enter this game with just one loss, and those losses are nothing to be ashamed of. Frenchtown dropped a tight one to #1 Billings Central, while Dillon lost to #2 Laurel. Beavers QB J.T. Linder has gotten better with each game, tossing 7 touchdown passes in the last two weeks. Frenchtown has relied on running backs Johnny Dilworth and J.D. Undem all season and will continue to do the same this week.
CLASS B
Shepherd Mustangs (3-2) at #1 Huntley Project Red Devils (5-0)Friday, October 9 - 7 PMHuntley Project still has not allowed a point through five games this season, outscoring opponents 249-0. Shepherd is averaging 22 points per game this season, but was shutout by Columbus earlier in the year. The Red Devils close out the season against two opponents who are currently ranked in the top five, so this game appears to be their final opportunity for a shutout. However, the Red Devils haven't won a game by less than 40 points, so they could be in line for a truly historic season.
CLASS C 8-MAN
#4 Carter County (Ekalaka) Bulldogs (4-0) at #1 Wibaux Longhorns (5-0)Saturday, October 10 - 1 PMThese teams split their two meetings last season, with Carter County shutting out Wibaux 26-0 in the regular season, and the Longhorns getting their revenge with a 42-26 win in the first round of the playoffs. Carter County is led by quarterback Pat Hansen, who is effective at running the option. Running back Collin Harrell has scored nine touchdowns this year to and is the primary offensive option for Wibaux. This winner of this game will take control of the Eastern C division.
CLASS C 6-MAN
#1 Big Sandy Pioneers (5-0) at #5 Great Falls Central Catholic Mustangs (5-0)Saturday, October 10 - 1 PMIt's a battle for first place in the Northern Division between the two highest scoring teams in the league. Great Falls Central is trying to establish itself as a legitimate contender in 6-man land, and beating Big Sandy would be a huge statement. The Pioneers whipped the Mustangs by 50 points last year. It's homecoming for GFCC, so it should be an emotionally charged atmosphere in the Electric City.
