AV-CTL report: Week of Oct. 12-17

Suburban Wichita Reporter

The top soccer teams in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League shouldn’t have any problems with their opponents this week.

It all starts Tuesday when Maize (13-0-0, ranked fourth overall, third in Class 6A state, first in 6A southwest region) host Wichita Heights. Also Tuesday are Newton (11-2-0, seventh overall, third in 5A state, second in 5A region) at Goddard, Hutchinson (9-2-1, sixth overall, second in 5A state, first in 5A region) at Ark City and Winfield (8-5-0 and fourth in 5A region) at Salina South.

Thursday’s games include Wichita Southeast at Hutchinson and Valley Center at Rose Hill (8-1-0, third in 4-1A state, first in 4-1A region). The Rockets will host a tournament Oct. 17.

The Division II volleyball title will be decided Tuesday at Winfield as the Vikings host the frontrunners. Valley Center (27-3, fifth in 4A) has a two-game advantage over Newton (24-7 and ranked in 5A), in its quest for a second straight undefeated league championship.

Other games feature Andover Central (30-0, third in 5A) entertaining Andale, Kingman and Rose Hill. Goddard (ranked in 6A) and Derby will be at Hutchinson, while Salina South (ranked in 5A) hosts Salina Central and Maize in a key Division I triangular.

Football begins district play Friday with some of the biggest games of the season on tap. And none will be bigger than a pair of matchups between Number 1 and Number 2 in two different classes. Hutchinson (6-0) and ranked first in Class 5A will play at second-ranked McPherson (6-0). In Class 4A, top-ranked team Buhler (6-0) is on the road against No. 2 Andale (6-0). Neither game will affect divisional standings.

In Class 6A, Wichita Southeast heads to No. 9 Derby (4-2). Class 5A has a couple of divisional games; No. 10 Newton (2-1, 5-1) at Winfield (2-1, 3-3), and No. 8 Salina Central (3-1, 5-1) at Salina South (2-2, 3-3). Class 4A games also include El Dorado (0-3, 0-6) at third-ranked Andover (2-1, 5-1) while Trinity (4-2) is at fourth-ranked Rose Hill (5-1).

With everyone starting over at 0-0 for district play, the next three games are important for each team. Here is the rest of the district schedule for AV-CTL teams, some games with league implications: Dodge City (4-2, 10th in 6A) at winless Goddard (0-6), Garden City (4-2) at Maize (1-5), Valley Center (0-6) at Liberal (1-5), Ark City (4-2) at Kapaun (3-3), Campus (1-5) at Wichita Northwest (4-2), Augusta (0-6) at Circle (3-3) and Kingman (0-6) at Ulysses (3-3).

Two other district games with potential league implications are Andover Central (2-2, 2-5) at Mulvane (2-2, 4-2) in Division III, while Wellington (2-2, 3-3) goes to Clearwater (1-3, 1-5) in Division IV.
